AUGUST 2012

Much needed rain in Los Cabos finally came. But after the torrential downpour, El Ranchito Temporary home for dogs in San Jose del Cabo was washed away completely.

The dogs who called El Ranchito home were evacuated and have been placed in foster homes until the shelter can be rebuilt. El Ranchito was started earlier this year with the help of \"Voluntarios del Corazon\" (Volunteers of the Heart)to serve as a temporary home for dogs who have been severely abused and neglected. Most suffering from malnutrition, illness, or injuries that require extensive medical care and rehabilitation. It has been an ongoing struggle to keep up with the daily requirements. Food, medication, supplies, and materials to build the shelter have all been donated by caring individuals.

The shelter was finally starting to take shape. Small shelters providing shade were built, a small structure was created to store food and supplies, and a fence was just put up by volunteers using donated fencing and posts earlier this month. It was a milestone, a cause for celebration. The shelter had room for about 15 dogs and was now able to keep the new arrivals quarantined until it was determined that they were free of contagious disease. No one would have guessed that this would all be washed away so quickly. The food, the supplies, even the fence ... gone. Fortunately, the volunteers were able to evacuate all but two of the dogs before the river of water washed them away.

There are still two dogs missing, a momma and her pup that had just arrived at the shelter a few days ago. The dogs were frightened by thunder and ran off, the search for them continues.

After loosing everything they have put into the shelter, Mariana Rivera and Nereyda Rivera are saddened, but optimistic that the shelter will be rebuilt better than ever. They need help. Any donation will be greatly appreciated. If you happen to be in San Jose del Cabo, please donate what you can. They need dog food, feeding dishes, supplies, building material, etc. You can contact them directly at 011 52 624 358 1929

UPDATE ... The missing momma and pup have been found!
